There's no single best platform — only the best one for your situation. Here's an honest look at three common foundations, what each is genuinely good at, and where each one will frustrate you.
Shopify
Best for: straightforward e-commerce, fast. Shopify handles payments, inventory, shipping and checkout out of the box, reliably and securely. If you're selling products and want proven plumbing, it's a strong default.
The trade-offs: you're working within Shopify's structure. Deep design customisation and unusual features mean wrestling its theme system or paying for apps that stack up in monthly fees. Many stores look similar because they share themes. For a premium brand wanting a distinct, fully-custom experience, it can feel like a ceiling.
Webflow
Best for: design-rich marketing sites you want to edit visually. Webflow gives designers real control without a developer for every change, and produces clean, fast sites. Great for portfolios, brochure sites, and content-driven brands.
The trade-offs: e-commerce is capable but less mature than Shopify's. Complex logic, custom apps or heavy automation hit its limits. And you're renting the platform — its pricing, its rules, its lock-in.
Custom
Best for: when the site is doing real, specific work — a unique experience, a configurator, deep automation, total design freedom, or performance that has to be exceptional. Custom is built to fit you exactly and to grow without hitting a platform's wall.
The trade-offs: higher upfront investment and proper development. It's overkill for a simple brochure that never changes. It earns its keep when the website genuinely matters to the business.
How to choose
Ask what the site has to do. Selling standard products simply? Shopify. A beautiful marketing site you'll update often? Webflow. Something distinctive, high-performance, or wired into your operations? Custom. Often the right answer is a thoughtful mix — and a good studio will tell you when a platform beats a build.
Our honest stance
We build custom because our clients sell on craft and feeling that templates can't carry — but we'll happily recommend Shopify or Webflow when it's genuinely the smarter spend. The goal is the right foundation for you, not the biggest invoice.
