Every platform now offers a chatbot widget. Drop it in, and you have "AI." The trouble is what happens when a customer asks something specific — and the generic bot answers wrong, or worse, confidently invents an answer.
The off-the-shelf bot
Cheap, fast to install, and fine for the basics. It can field opening hours and point people to a contact form. It's a glorified FAQ with a typing animation.
Where it breaks: it doesn't know your products, your policies or your inventory. It can't check whether a watch is still in stock or what your return window is. And when it doesn't know, it either stalls or hallucinates — both of which cost you trust.
The custom AI chatbot
A custom agent is trained on your knowledge — your catalogue, your policies, your tone of voice. The technique behind it is called RAG (retrieval-augmented generation): before answering, the agent looks up the real facts from your own content, then responds based on those. It doesn't guess. It cites your truth.
That means it can:
- Answer detailed product and stock questions accurately.
- Speak in your brand voice, in English or Arabic.
- Qualify a lead and hand a serious buyer to a human at the right moment.
- Live on your site and WhatsApp, with the same brain behind both.
How to choose
If the bot only needs to point people around, off-the-shelf is fine. If it's representing a premium brand, handling real product questions, or you're losing sales to slow replies — you need custom. A luxury buyer who gets a wrong answer doesn't ask again. They leave.
The honest middle path
Sometimes the right answer is a custom agent on a sensible budget — trained well, scoped tightly, doing a few things excellently rather than everything poorly. That's usually where we land clients.
